Everybody is aware that the sun (in fact the UV factor) is dangerous. Numerous and frequent health campaigns acknowledged that sun exposure must be limited to certain hours and specific times. Still, skin damage is hard to avoid and that is why sunless tanning (either indoor, self tanning or tanning injections such as Melanotan II) is now seen as a happy alternative or, at least, a safer one to real sun exposure. How can sun overexposure damage the skin ? The truth is that sunburns are responsible for erythema and a lot of pain. The erythema is caused by the increase blood flow to the affected skin.
From a medical point of view, erythema indicates total failure of sun protection and severe UV damage (more with real sun and less indoor). It is thought that there is a connection between the DNA and UV damage. Perturbing the DNA is now considered a high cancer risk. It is hard to fully control sun exposure, so sunburns are frequent, especially for Caucasians. The unhappiest are the albinos who lack the pigment called melanin. A regular production of melanin is equivalent to absorbing UV from sunlight and protection against skin damage. Well, in the case of albinos, melanin can’t do its job because it lacks a particular enzyme.
No matter what people choose: real sun or indoor tanning, protection against UV radiation is a must. There are: 1. sunscreens which absorb ultraviolet light (available as gel, cream or lotion, they contain chemicals that absorb UV rays) and 2. sunblocks which stop the UV by reflecting them. All sunscreens are labeled with SPF; the longer is the sun exposure or indoor tanning, the bigger is the factor protection.
The ability to control the intensity of radiation puts is an advantage the indoor tanning has to offer.
Beach tanning
The term beach tanning includes, in fact, a few elements which act together like a sea cure, healthy and enjoyable, providing a good physical condition and an attractive look. Doctors all over the world recommend their patients to go to the seaside. Sun exposure is damaging, and people often forget about its risks, but it is most pleasant to breathe in those fine particles dispersed by waves coming up against the shore. The cool breeze is that wind occurring as an effect to the differences between temperature of a sea or a lake or an ocean and the land behind it. The sea breeze and the negative ions are the real benefits.
Ions are molecules gaining or loosing electrical charge. It is thought that air in the mountains and in the beach contains tens of thousands of negative ions, a huge density compared to the air in the cities, houses or offices. All these climatic factors and the attraction of sunny beaches and bronzed bodies resulted in the prosperous evolving of beaches and the migration to friendly and sunny spas .
People are interested in beach offers and conditions, so now plenty of useful information is available to help or rather to persuade people to choose a beach or another. Competition is ruthless as the whole industry is extremely profitable, and the expectations are pretty high. America’s top 10 beaches in 2004 are:
